Periaazhwar Story
Vishnuchithar makes garlands daily for Lord Vadapatrasai. One day Lord Vadapatrasai came in Vishnuchithar's dreams and told him to go to Madurai raajaa (king) and tell him that Lord Sriman Narayanaa is the best. Lord Vadapatrasai told Vishnuchithar since the king did not know who is the best. The king puts a kizhi (a magical bag of money) on top of a tree. When Vishnuchithar explains the king that Sriman Narayana is the best, the kizhi falls in Vishnuchithar's hands. The king gives him lot of prizes and drives him in his elephant. When Vishnuchithar reaches Srivilliputhur Lord Vishnu, with Thaayaar, chakaram and changu comes in the sky sitting on garudan. Vishnuchithar saw the beautiful Perumal and then he says long live perumal for million more years by singing பல்லாண்டு. Because of his deep love to Perumaal
he got the name Periyaazhwar.
In Upadesa Rathinamaalai (which i am learning now), Sri Manavaala Maamunigal says
"பொங்கும் பரிவாலே வில்லிபுத்தூர் பட்டர்பிரான் பெற்றான் பெரியாழ்வார் என்னும் பெயர்."

The Story of Thirupaanalwar
There is a Sri Ranganaathar temple in Sri Rangam. Long ago no devotee could come, only archagars. One day Thirupaanalwar came to pray. He prayed on the edge of the the tiny bridge in Cauvery river in the morning. One of the archagar came after a bath and told thirupaanalwar to move. but thirupaanalwar did not listen because he was in big concentration. So the archagar threw a stone. thirrupaanalwar got hurt and noticed and moved. When the archagar went inside the temple, Lord Ranganaathar's forehead was bleeding. Lord Ranganaathar told him that he hit his devotee with a stone, and also told him that only if he told sorry to thirupaanalwar, took him by shoulder and got him here his blood will stop. Then the archagar went and lifted thirupaanalwar by the shoulder and brought him to the temple. When thirupanalwar saw Lord Ranganaathar for the very... very... very first time he began to sing Amalanaathipiraan. Each paasuram of Amalanadhipiran describes Lord Ranganatha's body parts from feet to head. After seeing Lord Ranganaathaar, thirupaanalwar said " Aranganai kanda kangal matronrinai kaanaave" which means I Will Not Look At Anything Else" and fell in the lotus feet of Lord Ranganaathar and went to Vaikuntam.
